Richard Atkins Primary School

Reading

At Richard Atkins we aim to encourage children to feel passionate about reading and to inspire personal interest and curiosity about a range of literacy activities.

Our aim is to develop each child into a confident and fluent reader, who reads for a variety of purposes and achieves National Standards in reading.

We use books from a range of schemes including Bug Club, PM Readers, Oxford Reading Tree, Tree -Tops, Project X and Collins Big Cat. All reading scheme books are levelled and colour coded to ensure an accurate match for each individual reader. To find out more about Phonics click below.

Throughout their time at Richard Atkins, children will also cover a large range of fiction genres as well as reading different non-fiction text types.

Our school library is an integral part of our learning.

Our school library is an integral part of our learning and children are actively encouraged to use both the school and our local public libraries.

All children are set reading homework daily, and we encourage them to read widely and to read and discuss what they have read with their parents and other family members.
